2011 Compass Rose Geocoin - Daybreak

The 2011 Compass Rose Geocoin was created to celebrate the importance of the sun to navigation. Throughout history, the sun has been a critical element in determining a position on the earth or the sea. As the sun streaks across the sky each day, it has been important to understand where it would both rise and set each day of the calendar year. Since the early 1700s, knowledge of the sun’s declination was a critical component in calculating longitudinal position on the earth. The design on the front side of this geocoin illustrates the Copernican astronomical system. The intricate detailing shows how the tilt of earth at the equinoxes relates to the other planets in our solar system. These types of maps were often made for sale to the general public as ornamental displays. Although sea faring captains would not use these maps they did serve their purpose in the artistic realm.

The design on the back side of this geocoin is based on a map that was created in the year 1613. This map covers the world on the Atlantic side of the longitudinal equator. Revolving around the perimeter are zodiac signs arranged according to the alignment of the constellations to the sun during the year. Each planet in our solar system is represented by a Swarovski gemstone embedded in the surface of the geocoin.

The detailing of this year’s 2011 Compass Rose Geocoin is nothing short of amazing. If you look closely you will see there are two different die sets used on the front of the coins. One die is struck with a raised pattern while the other die is struck with a recessed pattern. Not only are there different finishes but also different imitation hard enamel color schemes.
